From Norway to a Colour Palette: My October Challenge Card

Blink and you miss it—that’s how I feel about the whole summer! I was still waiting to do some summer activities, and suddenly everyone was talking about Halloween and Christmas. My brain can’t keep up.

When I started preparing my October creations for the Outlawz challenges, I couldn’t find the theme for the Twisted challenge. I wondered whose turn it was to choose one. It turned out to be mine!

I was still firmly stuck in summer, so I didn’t feel ready for Halloween colours. As much as I love autumn colours, I wasn’t quite ready for those either. Instead, I chose a photo from our lovely cruise from Liverpool to Norway with Fred. Olsen. I asked ChatGPT to create a colour palette from it, and I was impressed with what it came up with.

My photo is on the right, with the colour palette on the left. I had my colours—but then my mind went completely blank about what to make!

I tried mandalas, but I didn’t like how they looked in those colours. Then I explored mountain scenes, although finding a design that worked took longer than I expected. Eventually, I found a circular layered mountain scene in Cricut Design Space. I changed some of its colours, added a border cut from another colour in the palette, and mounted it all on a background in the final colour.

It’s a simple design, but getting the colours and the cuts just right took ages. Here’s the finished card:

I photographed the card and added it to an AI-generated background that complements the colours.

Now I’m curious what ChatGPT would come up with if I asked it to design a card using the same palette, or to suggest something in a particular style. I know someone who uses AI to mock up ideas for her products before making them, so she can experiment until she’s happy with a design. Her quirky creations are well worth a look at Lollygag.

Check out the other challenges at Outlawz and share your own creations, anyone can join in.
